Vote for the best! Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER)

Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum: What is it?
The Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER) is a three-dimensional network of branching tubes and pockets. It is called "Rough" Endoplasmic Reticulum because of the ribosomes attached to the surface of the organelle. This organelle is in both plant and animal cells.

Figure 1: The image above displays the Endoplasmic Reiticulum of a cell. The region that is dark purple and contains ribosomes is the Rough Endoplasmic Reiticulum. The other area is the Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum.

Where is it located?
The Endoplasmic Reticulum is located inside eukaryotic plant and animal cells. The Rough ER is found throughout the cell but is more dense near the nucleus and the Golgi Apparatus. It extends throughout the cytoplasm and continues from the nuclear membrane to the cell membrane.

How it Functions
The ribosomes on the surface of the endoplasmic reticulum are called "membrane bound" have the responsibility of assembling many proteins, which is called translation. The rough ER works with the membrane bound ribosomes taking the polypeptides and amino acids from the cytosol and continues protein assembly, including attaching a destination label to each one of them at an early stage.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The proteins are produced for the plasma membrane, Golgi apparatus, secretory vesicles, plant vacuoles, lysosomes, endosomes and the endoplasmic reticulum itself. Some of the proteins are also delivered to the lumen, the space inside the ER, or the ER membrane itself.

Figure 2: The image above displays the transportation route of proteins from the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum.

Protein Folding Unit
In the lumen of the Rough ER is where proteins are folded to produce a highly important biochemical architecture which will provide recognition and linking sites such as the "lock and key".

Protein Quality Control Section
Inside the lumen there is also a quality control section which rejects any proteins that are incorrectly formed or incorrectly folded. These rejects are stored in the lumen or sent for recycling to break down into amino acids. Emphysema (a lung problem) could be caused by the quality control section by contentiously rejecting proteins that are not folded correctly.

Figure 3: The image above displays the process of Protein synthesis within the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum

Why you should vote for the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
  • THEY SERVE AS STRUCTURAL SUPPORT TO THE CELL
  • PROVIDES THE WHOLE BODY WITH PROTEINS
  • THEY HELP IN TRANSPORTING MATERIALS THROUGH THE CELL
  • THEY AID IN TRANSLATION OF RNA DUE TO THE PRESENCE OF ANY RIBOSOMES ON IT'S SURFACE.
  • THEY HELP IN THE MODIFICATION OF PROTEINS
  • BECAUSE CHUCK NORRIS SAID SO!!!!!!!!!
  • BECAUSE LIAM NEESON WILL FIND YOU, AND WILL KILL YOU

Summary
  • The Organelle called Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum is a series of networks of membrane enclosed flattened tubules that are found in the eukaryotic animal and plant cells.
  • The Rough ER, spotted with millions of membrane bound ribosomes, is involved with the production, folding, quality control and dispatch of some proteins
  • The Rough ER is the BEST EVER! Even ask President BARACK OBAMA!

DO YOU REALLY THINK THERES A BETTER ORGANELLE IN THE CELL?

Image result for THE ROCK IT DOESN'T MATTER

  1. The R.E.R is only rough because of my organelle; the ribosomes. Without the ribosomes your organelle wouldn't be functioning because of the signals of information the ribosome sends.

    1. HELL YEAH VOTE RIBOSOMES!!!!!!!

  2. Your organelle is decent, but wouldn't work without the nucleolus. The R.E.R. wouldn't be able to function without the ribosomes my organelle produces yet alone have something to do.

  3. Listen up, member of my family. You would be nothing without me.I create precious ribosomal subunits, A.K.A. the things that you provide a place to sit. Without the ribosomes, you would not be able to function, as their signals are what give it instruction.

    xo, Nucleolus

    1. It takes alot more skill to use the ribosomes for something positive then to just create them and send them out. #GETONMYLEVEL #GETWRECKED

  4. Keep dreaming. Yeah the cell may need some protein, whatever. What the cell REALLY needs is energy. I create energy from the nutrients the plant or body receives and carry it through to the rest of the cell in order for them to carry on everyday. Especially for you athletes out there, I supply your muscles A LOT of strength and energy to support you! I'm not called the "powerhouse" for nothing!
