VOTE NUCLEOLUS

VOTE NUCLEOLUS: the Brain of the Nucleus!
Here is a snippet of what a nucleus would look like without a nucleolus...

What is the Nucleolus?

It is a round organelle located in the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell. It has no membrane surrounding it; it simply sits in the nucleus.

-> A factory where the basic subunits for ribosomes to be created.

How it Works

The nucleolus creates ribonucleic acid, or RNA, which is rewritten and combined with proteins in order to create incomplete ribosomes.

RNA carries blueprint information from the DNA to control the synthesis of proteins.

Importance

Without the nucleolus creating incomplete ribosomes, the cell would not be able to complete its goal of creating proteins, since ribosomes are  an essential organelle for protein synthesis.

NO NUCLEOLUS = NO RIBOSOMES = NO PROTEINS = CELL ULTIMATELY FAILS AT LIFE

IN SHORT... RNA  is responsible for ensuring the future creation of proteins within the cell

BACKGROUND INFO

Principle Types of RNA Required for Protein Synthesis

mRNA (messenger RNA)  - carries copies of the genetic information from DNA since it is too precious too travel around the cell. It uses three-base code words that each specify a specific amino acid.

tRNA (transfer RNA) - essential for decoding the words in the mRNA. Each amino acid has its own type of tRNA, which binds it.

rRNA (ribosomal RNA) - associates with proteins to eventually create ribosomes. They catalyze the amino acids into protein chains and they bind tRNA’s with other essential molecules that are vital for protein
synthesis.

DNA vs. RNA
- The legitimate blueprint of biological instructions for the functioning of a cell of a living organism

- Found in mitochondria and nucleus

- Double-stranded structure
- Carries the blueprint of the code of the DNA. It transfers these genetic instructions needed for the creation of the ribosome.

- Found in nucleolus, cytoplasm and ribosome

- Single-stranded structure

Nucleolus fun facts!

-> in certain viruses, the RNA carries the genetic information instead of the DNA

-> many species of cells contain many nucleoli in a single nucleus

-> the nucleolus disappears during mitosis

-> it is not surrounded by a membrane!

Vote Nucleolus... because you can't live without a brain

  1. You say that the nucleolus is the most important organelle? I don't think so... Without the nucleus protecting it where would it be? It wouldn't be anywhere.

  2. Yo Mrs. Nucleus,
congrats for controlling all of us.
    However, you better thank me
    for keeping you problem free.
I make copies of your DNA information
to keep it safe from the rest of the nation.
Next time you flaunt your protection ability,
consider life if your DNA was set free.
    I keep your DNA unharmed,
you're welcome for keeping you armed.

  3. Thank you for your insightful thoughts Mme Nucleolus but don't forget that I have my nuclear membrane that can also protects my DNA from the "rest of the nation" and from being "set free". In fact, that is what actually protects the DNA from the rest of the organelles in the cell.

    Much love from your friend,

    The Nucleus ;)

  5. Sure, you may be the brains of the cell, but you can't work without the energy from the chloroplasts... and if you're in an animal cell, your energy still indirectly comes from plants in the food chain #Chloroplasts4Lyfe

  6. HOLA nucleolus! As it is true that you create me, but as I'll have you know it's in your best interest because if you chose not to create me, the whole cell including you will DIE! Yeah you heard me I said DIE! So my creator... YOU NEED ME!!!!!!!!

  7. Really Domenique....thought you were better than that. The cell membrane is by far the most important organelle. Without me, the cell would be a blob of nothing. I surround and protect, come on, get it together.
