What is There to Know About the Great R.E.R.?

  The Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum

The rough endoplasmic reticulum is often forgotten as part of the cell.  However, without the R.E.R.,
many of your substantial physical qualities wouldn't be so substantial.

What's its function ?

The main function of this organelle is to synthesize and package proteins.  These proteins are synthesized using ribosomes which create the "rough" outer layer of the organelle. Ribosomes will transfer mRNA (DNA that holds genetic information) into PROTEIN.

Where is it?

In case you were wondering where the R.E.R. is located, it is considered the neighbour of the Golgi apparatus and cell membrane.  With that, once the protein is produced, it will be pinched of a vesicle and then transferred to the Golgi apparatus and/or the cell membrane.

What does it look like ?

Since the rough endoplasmic reticulum is so focused on making everyone else's appearance so great, people often forget about his.  The R.E.R. differentiates greatly from the smooth endoplasmic reticulum.  The R.E.R. looks a lot like it contains sheets/disks of bumpy skin caused by the ribosomes.  Although the picture above makes the R.E.R. look pretty in pink, in reality it is transparent.

Why rough over soft ?

Now, why should you choose the ROUGH endoplasmic reticulum over the soft? The soft E.R. does nothing but store proteins and lipids for the rough.  Meaning that the R.E.R. is the only part of the E.R. that does the assembling.

  1. This is true but without the ribosomes you wouldn't even be a R.E.R you would only be a S.E.R.

  2. There's no point of commenting against this organelle. Its simply the best. I GOT YOU FAM #R.E.R4LIFE
